Individual Therapy

FOR OREGON RESIDENTS

My Therapy Practice

Eileen’s therapy practice, which includes Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), is focused solely on supporting parents who are struggling in their parenting experience, with specialized expertise in working with adoptive and biological parents of children and teens who have complex and intense medical, mental health, and/or behavioral needs.

The moms and dads that Eileen supports have experienced a tremendous amount of stress, grief, and loss as parents. They find themselves feeling judged by family and friends, at a loss for how to help themselves given their current reality, and profoundly isolated in their experience. For most, parenting is not at all what they expected, and they are desperate to alleviate the overwhelm, anxiety and depression they are experiencing in their day-to-day lives.

We don't know what we would have done without your understanding and guidance through these years.
- Renee, parent client

Eileen (and EMDR therapy) will help parents with:

Improved relationship

When you can find a sense of peace and calm within yourself, this translates to your relationships, including your relationship with your child or teen. EMDR is a proven method for identifying and then resolving internal distress, so you can feel more open to connection with others around you.

Reduction in triggers
There are reasons why, despite your heroic efforts to stay calm and grounded in the midst of your child or teen’s struggles, you are instead triggered by their needs and behaviors. This is not your fault, and identifying your triggers and then resolving associated traumas (whether from your own childhood or more recently experienced traumas) can help you experience less reactivity and more steadiness in the midst of those storms.

Increase in confidence
Feeling confident as the parent of a child or teen with complex needs can be difficult to achieve without support, given the nearly constant day-to-day stressors. Processing your experience with a skilled therapist and the use of EMDR therapy can help you make sense of the chaos and leave you feeling more confident and grounded as a person and parent.

Overcoming trauma, grief and loss
Many parents of kids with complex needs, whether it be medical, mental health or behavioral challenges have experienced trauma, grief, and loss in their parenting experience. This could be due to the behavioral symptoms their child or teen experiences, chronic lack of sleep due to their child’s needs, the grief that accompanies the loss of the parent experience you imagined you’d have, or trauma caused by the medical and school systems. EMDR therapy has been found to be highly effective and efficient when it comes to managing grief and loss, as well as resolving both “old” and more recent traumas that are now being triggered by your parenting experience.

To say that working with you has changed our life would be an understatement. We have hope now, for not only for our son, but for each of us, as we incorporate this model into our daily lives.
- Allison, parent client
